Xbox players looking for something different to play this weekend have another free game worth checking out. Sunderfolk is temporarily free to play on Xbox, giving players a chance to jump into its tabletop-inspired tactical RPG without buying the full game first.
The offer is only sticking around for a few days, with the free-play period running through Sunday, August 16, 2026. That makes this less of a “claim it now and keep it forever” deal and more of a weekend test drive. Still, Sunderfolk is the kind of game that can reveal what it’s doing pretty quickly — especially if you have a few friends willing to join.
Sunderfolk Turns Your Phone Into the Controller
Sunderfolk is not built like a typical Xbox RPG. Instead of handing everyone a traditional controller, the game lets players use a smartphone or tablet to manage their character, choose abilities, check cards and make decisions while the main action plays out on a shared screen.
It sounds slightly strange until you see the idea in motion. The setup borrows heavily from tabletop game nights, only without the pile of cards, character sheets and rulebooks taking over the table. Developer Secret Door designed the game around groups, with support for up to four players exploring the Sunderlands together.
That phone-based setup also means a group does not need four Xbox controllers sitting around. Each player connects through the free companion app, while the console handles the actual game.
The Free Xbox Weekend Is a Good Fit for Sunderfolk
A free weekend makes particular sense for something like Sunderfolk. It is a $49.99 game at its regular Xbox Store price, although Microsoft currently lists it at a substantial temporary discount. More importantly, this is a multiplayer game that is much easier to judge after actually getting a group together than after watching a trailer.
Combat is turn-based and tactical rather than frantic. Players choose heroes with different abilities, position them around battlefields and work through encounters as a team. The game wraps all of that in a fantasy world populated by anthropomorphic heroes and creatures.
There are six distinct hero classes to experiment with, and abilities are handled through skill cards rather than sprawling traditional RPG menus. The whole thing has deliberately been built to feel closer to sitting around a tabletop game than grinding through another massive online RPG.
You Can Play With Friends Without Everyone Buying a Copy
One of Sunderfolk’s more unusual strengths is how group play works. The experience was designed around one shared game screen, with everyone using their own mobile devices as their personal interface.
Xbox previously highlighted that Sunderfolk supports up to four players and can be played either together locally or remotely. For remote sessions, the main game screen can be shared while players continue making their moves through their phones or tablets.
That matters during a free-play promotion. Instead of convincing an entire group to buy a copy of an unfamiliar tactical RPG, players have a short window to simply get everyone together and see whether the format clicks.
Maybe it does. Maybe someone spends 20 minutes arguing over whose turn it is to save the party. That’s part of the appeal.
Sunderfolk Has Already Appeared in Xbox Free Play Days Before
This is not Sunderfolk’s first brush with Xbox’s limited-time free game promotions. The RPG previously appeared in an Xbox Free Play Days lineup in February 2026, alongside Battlefield 6, Chip ‘n Clawz vs. The Brainioids and Polterguys: Possession Party.
Its return gives anyone who skipped that earlier opportunity another shot. It also arrives at a useful point for the game. Sunderfolk has been around long enough that there is plenty of player feedback available, but it is still unconventional enough that many Xbox owners may never have tried it.
Free weekends are made for games like this.
Xbox Players Don’t Have Long to Try It
The important part is the deadline. Sunderfolk’s current free Xbox period is expected to end on August 16, 2026, so players interested in trying it should not treat this like a permanent giveaway.
Once the free period ends, continued access will require purchasing the game or otherwise having access through an eligible Xbox offering. Progress made during these types of Free Play Days events can generally carry over when the same game is purchased afterward, giving players an easy route to continue rather than starting again.
Sunderfolk probably will not be the game for somebody looking for a solo cinematic blockbuster or a fast competitive shooter. For a group that likes tactical RPGs, tabletop games or simply yelling questionable strategies at each other from the couch, though, a free weekend is a pretty low-risk way to find out whether it belongs in the rotation.
